Newcastle United are a football club which plays in the Championship. They were relegated from the Premier Division after finishing 18th the preceding season.

Managing Newcastle United

Being the manager of Newcastle isn't the hardest challenge in the game. When starting a new game with the club, the board and the supporters will expect automatic promotion from the Championship, to the Premier League. The club doesn't have a lot of money to spend at first, but there is an abundance of reasonable, good players. In the original version of the game you'll have players like:

  • Obafami Martins (not in the September update)
  • Damien Duff (not in the September update)
  • Geremi
  • Kevin Nolan
  • Adam Smith
  • Andrew Caroll
  • Steven Taylor
  • Danny Simpson (on Loan from Man Utd, only in September update)

Also, the club has an impressive youth academy and this shows; the youth squad holds a few raw talents like Haris Vuckic, Samuel Adje and Fabio Zamblera.

Playing the Championship

Like said, the first season isn't the hardest challenge in the game. The Newcastle Squad has a lot of talent and ability to rise up to the challenge. The harder part is keeping hold of the players the first season. Being relegated the season before leaves the clubo vulnerable to transfer raids at the quality players like Nolan, Jose Enrique and Steven Taylor. Also the squad is hugely demotivated, so as their managr you'll need to spend a lot of time in pre-season and squad preperation.

During the first season managing the Newcastle side, it's important to keep focus on the main objective; promotion. The Board will also ask of you to challenge the league cup and FA-cup. Although these challenges are tempting and not too hard at first. The Newcastle Squad will have a hard time against most of the Premiership sides, and probably won't make it past the fifth round or quarter finals (expections are possible).

When all goes well in the Champhionship, and it should, you'll have some spare time in renewing and rebuilding the squad for survival in the next season. It's advisable to do this during the first season, some players may be great while playing in the Championship but they'll most likely fail in the Premier League. The likes of Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands and Nicky Butt will most likely need to be replaced in preperation for the Premier League.

Newcastle in the Premier League

Playing the Championship with Newcastle is actually the easy part of the challenge. As The Magpies will most likely be promoted to the Premier League, the challenge becomes significantly hard. Most likely the board will expect survival in the Premiership. And while this may seem like an easy task, the Newcastle squad is by far ready to face the likes of West Ham United, Fulham or even Wigan Athletic. During pre-season the squad will need to undergo a huge make-over. Like said, sell some of the mentioned players, even if they were great in the Championship.
